Maintaining crystal clear water, free from the dreaded algae bloom (green water) is the aim of the vast majority of us pond keepers. In my opinion an Ultraviolet sterilizer or UV Clarifier is the best all round method of controlling algae in water.

Although there are other popular methods of pond algae control, including shading, using pond algaecide products, using aquatic plants and other chemical treatments I recommend UV sterilization because it will cost you less money in the long run as well as save you lots of time and effort.

Is a Pond UV Sterilizer The Same As A Pond UV Clarifier?

Many pond keepers and manufacturers use the above terms to describe their product, without inferring any difference. There are however some differences. A Pond UV Sterilizer in essence sterilizes pond water, not only destroying green algae cells but also parasites, bacteria and other living organisms that are found circulating around your pond. UV sterilizers are usually used in Koi ponds where there are larger volumes of water. A pond UV clarifier kills algae cells by bombarding them with UV rays, causing them to flocculate (clump together), making them easier to remove by your pond filter or pond vacuum. Pond clarifiers also destroy some floating organisms, but not to the same extent as a UV sterilizer.

Why Do You I Need A UV Sterilizer?

A UV sterilizer or UV clarifier is an essential piece of pond keeping equipment for any pond keeper wishing to maintain a healthy algae free pond eco system. There are a myriad of chemical algaecides on the market but there usefulness is short lived and in some instances they interfere with the beneficial bacteria living on the pond filter media. Pond UV sterilizers utilize UV rays to destroy floating algae along with many microscopic water borne parasites, bacteria and other unwanted organisms. A UV sterilizer or UV clarifier will not interfere with the beneficial Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter bacteria living on your pond filter media and is by far the best long term algae control method.
