Review Of Fall planted Flower Bulbs From Nature Hills Nursery

Fall Flower BulbsWhat Are Fall Flower Bulbs

Fall flower bulbs are planted in the fall and bloom in spring. The term "garden bulb" is often used to describe not only a true bulb, but corms, rhizomes, tubers and tuberous roots as well. While horticulturists like to be technically correct when discussing various plants, most home gardeners don’t worry about being too precise. Flowering bulbs offer the gardener beauty, a wide range of color, flowering times, and height.

Alliums are hardy plants and have exquisite beauty in both flower and leaf. Alliums are low maintenance plant types that are resistant to common pests and diseases, including rodents and deer. These garden plants grow in most soil types, providing it is well drained. Alliums need plenty of sunlight to flourish. The majority of Allium plant species multiply naturally, so they can be left untouched in the same area for years. Try a few Alliums in your flower beds or garden borders this season and discover the beauty of this under valued garden plant.

Amaryllis plants make great for cut flowers and they can also be grown indoors. Amaryllis plant varieties come in many beautiful shades of red, white, pink, salmon, orange and multi colored varieties. The planting period extends from October to April and the flowering period lasts for 7 to 8 weeks. They also can be grown in colder regions. In cold regions, pull up the bulbs before winter, and store them until spring. Some popular varieties include the Hercules Amaryllis bulb which has dark pink, large flowers, the Liberty Amaryllis, which has dark red flowers and is a little taller than most and the White Dazzler Amaryllis which is the most popular white variety.

Anemones or wind flowers consist of 120 species of perennial flowering plants, which grow from tubers. This plant species is native to Europe, North America and Japan. Anemone plants are perennial herbs. The fruits often bear long hairy styles, which aid their distribution by the wind. They produce cup-shaped yellowish, white, purple, violet, or red Anemone flowers. Anemones are used as a treatment for cramps, menstrual problems and emotional distress. Most Anemones should be planted in the fall and grown in well drained, moderately fertile soil in a lightly shaded or sunny location.

Begonia plants produce either stunning double flowers or single flowers and textured foliage. Begonias are half hardy plant types which make for colorful flower beds and garden borders. They also make excellent container plants or potted plant. The various Begonia varieties also make gorgeous cut flowers which can be placed or floated in shallow bowls. The majority of gardeners grow Begonias in patio pots or window boxes, where they are easy to get at due to their heavy feeding requirements.

The Crocus plant is Nature's way of announcing the arrival of spring. Long before winter fades, the beautiful flowers peep through to provide cheery spots of color to brighten up the landscape. The various Crocus varieties are perfect for flower beds, patio pots and window boxes. Flowering between February and March they are very hardy and will multiply and bloom with added beauty year after year.

Daffodils along with Tulips, Hyacinths and Crocus are the mainstays of the spring bulb color explosion. It is easy to see why Daffodil plants are so popular: they are a hardy plant type, pest free, disease free, naturalize well, live for years with minimal maintenance, multiply if left alone, and produce flowers in a variety of different shades, colors and sizes. They grow well in flower beds, garden borders and container planters. You can even grow them indoors.

Hyacinths are extremely fragrant spring-flowering bulbs that need to be planted in the fall. Along with tulip plants and daffodil plants they are one of the three big Dutch produced bulbs. All modern cultivars come from the species Hyacinthus Orientalis. Hyacinth flower bulbs are easily grown in your garden. Choose a well-drained spot that's sunny if you want them to come back year after year. When planting Hyacinth plant varieties avoid buying the fattest bulbs; they produce top heavy flower stalks, which often blow over.

Iris Fall planted garden bulbs, flower between November and June each year. Each species has different cultural requirements. Appropriately named after the Greek goddess of the rainbow, they are found wild throughout the Northern Hemisphere and have long been grown for their colorful flowers. The first iris that usually springs to mind is the bearded iris. This Iris plant variety has a broad, fleshy rhizome on the surface of the soil and a fan of grey green leaves. Although they all have relatively small flowers they are very tolerant garden plants for any well drained soil in full sun.

Lilies are loved by gardeners all over the world. They are beautiful, big, bright plants that are in actuality very easy to grow. They will grow in full sun, part sun and light shade. The soil pH doesn’t bother them and neither does the soil type. They do however have to have well drained soil. There are several species of Lilies, each blooming at different times during the summer. By mixing Lily types you can have continuous bloom in your garden, all summer long.

Contrary to popular belief the Tulip doesn’t originate in Holland but in Persia; literally translated to “turban”, describing the flowers shape. Tulips can be divided into early, mid, and late season flowering varieties. Choose varieties with different flowering times to extend the bloom season. Tulips look great planted in combination with annual and perennial flowers. Tulips are hardy in USDA zones 3 to 7. Tulips grow best in sandy, well drained soil and in a full sun location.
