13th century Fountains

  • Generalife Fountain & Gardens, Granada, Spain, forms a major part of the history of fountains in Spain. The gardens were completed first and the fountains were added later.
  • 1278 - The Fontana Maggiore Fountain, Perugia, Italy is arguably one of the most beautiful landscape fountain designs of the 13th century, in existence anywhere.

15th century Fountains

  • 1419 - Fonte Gaia, Piazza del Campo Fountain - Designed by Jacopo della Quercia, this fountain was replaced with an exact duplicate in 1868 by Tito Sarrocchi.

16th Century Fountains

  • 1534 - The Wall Fountain of The Tigris By Michelangelo, Florence, Italy, commissioned by Pope Clement VII. Italian garden decor of the type with a single niche remained popular in Italy, but the delicate carving of the early masters was forgotten with the new interest in wall fountains in the round.
  • 1541 - Geesebearer Fountain in Nuremberg, Germany.
  • 1544 - The Kindlifresserbrunnen Or Ogre Fountain, Bern, Switzerland,is probably one of the strangest of all decorative water fountain examples. The monstrous Ogre is depicted devouring a child.
  • 1543 - Fountain of Justice in Bern, Switzerland.
  • 1549 - Fountain of the Innocents, Paris, France.
  • 1557 - Fountain of Neptune in Messina, Italy.
  • 1557 - The Neptune Fountain of Rome was re-constructed in the late 1800's.
  • 1560 - Fountain of Hercules and Anateus in Castello, Italy.
  • 1570 - Inauguration of the restored aqueduct carrying the Aqua Vergine (water source of most of Rome's fountains
  • 1574 - The Fountain of The Moor, Piazza Navona, Rome, Italy is a truly animated water fountain, whose name is derived from the group of sculptures of the tank representing an Ethiopian fighting with a dolphin.
  • 1575 - The Pantheon Fountain, Piazza della Rotonda, Rome, Italy as the name suggests was eventually placed right in front of the Pantheon of Rome, on the Piazza della Rotonda. It replaced the previous fountain that Pope Eugene IV (1431-47) had done his best to decorate with a porphyry tub and two basalt lions.
  • 1575 - The Fountain In Piazza Colonna Rome, Italy is situated in the hustling atmosphere of Rome's Piazza Colonna. This pretty dolphin and lion head fountain sculpture is the work of Giacoma Della Porta.
  • 1597 - Tribolo's Wall Fountain of The Labyrinth, Florence, Italy predates the seated river gods on Giovanni Bologna's Fountain of Oceanus in the Boboli Garden, which was constructed between the years 1567 and 1576, and was probably their prototype.

  • 1564-1586 - Water Chain Cascade, Fountain of the Giants, Fountain of the Deluge, and Fountain of the Dolphin, all in Villa Lante at Bagnaia, Viterbo, Italy.
  • 1567 - Fountain of Oceanus, Boboli Gardens, Florence, Italy.
  • 1574 - The Neptune Fountain, Rome, Italy.
  • 1579 - Marforio Wall Fountains - Aqua Felice,  Rome, Italy, In 1579 a colossal Minerva was placed in the central niche instead of the Jupiter. This fountain was replaced in turn, in 1591, by the present small porphyry fountain of a seated goddess restored as Roma.
  • 1582 - Fountain of the Tortoises, Italy.
  • 1587 - The Trinita Dei Monti Fountain, Rome, Italy is as pleasing as it is simple garden fountain consisting of an ancient basin of red granite, about 13 feet across, resting on a large octagonal baluster emerging from an octagonal pool at ground level.

17th Century Fountains

  • 1611 - Mount Parnassus Grotto Fountain at Somerset House, London, England.
  • 1612 - Fountain of the Acqua Paola, Rome, Italy.
  • 1626 - Big Mask Fountain at Via Giulia, Rome, Italy.
  • 1643 - Triton Fountain, Piazza Barberini, Rome, Italy.
  • 1650 - The The Mary Fountain, Aachen, Germany was erected by the magistrate of the city of Aachen, Germany. it was customary during the middle ages to erect Marian wayside shrines close to springs or wells which had proven to have healing power
  • 1651 - The Fountain Of The Four Rivers, Piazza Navona, Rome, Italy, was designed by Gianlorenzo Bernini for Pope Innocent X, who owned the Pamphili Palace, overlooking the Navona square.
  • 1665 - Neptune Fountain, sculpted by Schweigger, Nuremberg, Germany.
  • 1667 - The Fountains at St. Peters Square in Rome, as rebuilt by Bernini.
  • 1667 - Hot Springs Fountain, renamed Mossy Fountain, at Aix-en-Provence, France.
  • 1670's - The Formal Gardens And Fountains at Chatsworth, England were created in the late 1600s by William Cavendish. It began as a grand Palladian Manor House, with extensive formal gardens, and ranks as one of the most splendid estates.
  • 1688 - A wealth of fountains at Versailles: Pyramid Fountain; Latona Fountain; Fountain of Apollo and Sculptures by Apollon, Tuby, La Fontaine, Le Notred.
  • 1689 - Grosser Garten and Fountains, Herrenhausen, Germany.
  • 1699 - Celestial and Terrestrial Sphere Fountain at Het Loo, Netherlands.

  • 1728 - Fountains at La Granja, San Ildefonso, Spain.
  • 1728 - Fountains at Pincian Hills, Rome, Italy.
  • 1732 - The Trevi Fountain In Rome, Italy, designed by Niccolo Salvi is undoubtedly the most famous of all Roman fountains. The Trevi fountain is the largest of the Baroque style fountains in the city of Rome and was highly popularized in the 1954 film "Three Coins In A Fountain".

  • 1808 - The Egyptian Fountain, aka The Water Carrier Fountain, Rue de Sevres, Paris, France.
  • 1811 - The Piazza del Popolo Fountains , Rome, Italy should be regarded as part of a grand architectural design for the Piazza del Popolo as a whole and not as individual water fountains.
  • 1821 - Kansas City, Missouri is founded. Goes on be called The City of Fountains, owing to its rich collection of public water features.
