Blanket weed goes under several names including: blanketweed, blanket weed, string algae, silk weed, filamentous algae, curly weed, maiden's hair and pond scum.

Blanket weed is not the same as suspended floating algae, responsible for causing algae blooms; algae blooms cause your pond water to look like a bowl of pea soup and starve the pond of oxygen.

What does blanket weed look like?

The picture on the left is what blanket weed looks like. It consists of long thin strands which as you can see are made up of single cells in a straight line. These strings grow like crazy.

When it is fished out of the water it looks like a wet blanket, hence the name blanketweed. Pond keepers with excessive blanket weed or string algae problems will often notice a lack of suspended algae. This is because the blanket weed is starving other algae out of existence, helped by reducing light penetration through the floating blanket.

Most larger koi ponds normally have a bottom drain and this means very little debris collects on the bottom and sides of ponds. In this case there is no need for the organic debris digestion component so rather go for the Viresco KOI.
