How Do Bead Filters Work?
Biological bead filters work in much the same way as a submerged rock bed or under-gravel filter does, except that bead filters have been designed to clean the pond water.
The average bead filter performs two functions....
Clarification Of Pond Water
This involves removing suspended solids contained within the fish pond i.e. small particles of partially digested fish food, debris, pond algae, bacteria, clays, and silts. In ponds with lots of fine suspended solids the pond water will often be cloudy. Larger organic pond solids however if left encourage the build up of heterotrophic bacteria and generally affect the health of the pond eco system.
Bead filters remove suspended solids as water is pushed up through the beads under pressure. The largest organic particles are removed by physical straining (80 microns +). Interception i.e. a collision between the surface of the plastic bead filter media and the particle removes the vast majority of organic solids measuring between 20 to 80 microns.
The smallest particles, measuring less than 20 microns are removed slowly by bead filtration (the bacteria biofilm on the surface of the bead biomedia capture and absorb these particles).
Pond Biofiltration
Nitrifying bacteria (Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter) colonies that have formed and live on the bead biological media surface convert toxic ammonia and nitrite into nitrate, which is a food source for aquatic plants and algae. Your average bead filter houses around 600,000 beads per cubic foot of floating bead media.
In addition to nitrifying bacteria there are a host of heterotrophic bacteria that are responsible for breaking down organic solids into carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O).

Fluidart Technologies Hydrabead Filter is a biological bead filter, available in three sizes for smaller ponds. This easy to install pressurized bed pond filter is easy to install, great when limited space is available and is constructed from tough injection molded ABS. The Hydrabead filter first introduced hydraulic backwash to bead filters. The Hydrabead filters utilize a smaller bead than conventional bead filters, providing greater surface area for better biological filtration. The smaller bead helps to "polish" your pond water. This Bead Filter n delivers a thorough backwash and rinse through the multiport valve. The sludge removal drain at the bottom assures full removal of waste with no dirty discharge to the pond.
For routine maintenance of the Hydrabead filter, simply open it at the middle of the tank, for easy access to the internals. All Hydrabead filters are fitted with a side mounted multiport valve as standard. This pressurized bead filter is rated at a 5.5 psi drop @ 95 gpm.

Fluidart Pinnacle Koi Pond Biological Filters
The dual valve Fluidart Pinnacle Bead Filter is a large Koi pond filter, designed for large Koi pond applications up to 25,000 gallons. It utilizes 2 energy saving pumps instead of a single larger pump, filtering the maximum water volume with minimum energy usage. The unique Hydra Swirl design allows solids to be spun to the center of the vessel where they stay until the sludge drain is opened. With the drain open and the pump running, solids are purged under pressure, fully removing waste in a few seconds.
During backwash the Pinnacle Bead Filter utilizes Hydra Thrust bead agitation, using forced air to agitate the beads and free up trapped debris. Pinnacle filter head pressures rank among the lowest in the industry. The filter's optimum flow side mount valve is rated 5.5 psi @ 95gpm.
