A thermometer is a low cost and essential piece of equipment for any serious fish pond keeper for several reasons.
Firstly you will know when it is the right temperature to change the type of Fish Food that you are feeding. Colder water temperatures between5 C - 8C (41 F - 46F) necessitate the feeding of a wheat germ based winter fish food.
In colder water Koi in particular semi hibernate and their metabolism slows down. This slowing down means that they are not in need of as much protein for growth and repair but instead need a food that is easier to digest i.e. wheat germ.
As the pond temperature rises above 8 C (46 F) it is now time to feed a summer fish food that is higher in protein. Without the use of a pond thermometer you would be guessing which may have an adverse effect upon your pond fish.
A pond thermometer will also come in really useful when adding chemicals to the pond water. Certain pond sludge products containing enzymes are designed to work at specific pond water temperatures.
