Blanket Weed Removal | Use Viresco for removal of blanket weed and debris from garden ponds

An extremely common pond keeping question that continually arises in one form or another by subscribers to my free weekly newsletter is "How Can I Get Rid Of Blanketweed?"...

Blanket weed commonly referred to as "pond scum" or string algae is a real nuisance to water gardeners; just ask any unfortunate pond keeper who suffers from this fast growing weed like pest.

It normally manifests itself as a hideous mass of slimy weed that floats on the surface of the pond and is capable of growing at a phenomenal rate. In many respects it has the appearance of a soaking wet pond blanket, hence the name.

Over the years I have come across many products claiming to be the best solution ever invented and the answer to "How Can I Get Rid Of Blanketweed?"

In reality many of these blanket weed removal products do work but only for short periods of time or with minimal effect or they have a detrimental effect upon aquatic life and plant life.

Historically Barley Straw has been used for the removal of blanket weed, with mixed results in many cases. Whilst chemicals released into the pond water by decaying barley straw (humic acid) definitely slow down the growth of this nuisance they don't in many cases actually cure the problem permanently.

Other products that have been used for blanket weed removal include electronic products but they also have mixed results in my opinion. As with land plants there are herbicidal type products but it is not wise to mix these toxic chemicals and pond life.

Destroying Blanket Weed ... A Real Blanketweed Solution Has Finally Arrived ...

The product I am about to talk about really does do what it says it will do and is without a doubt the best when it comes to removal of blanket weed and debris from garden ponds. By debris I mean pond sludge.

The product goes by the name of Viresco and is the invention of John McLauchlan, who is based in Rippon, North Yorkshire, England.

I only came across the range of Viresco products about a couple of years ago and since then have been an avid fan who would recommend it to anyone, who has blanket weed problems.

The product has been in existence since 1997 and unlike many commercially large organizations the company is still a family run affair with the product being posted to anywhere in the world from the UK.

One thing you can be sure of is that it is very reasonably priced and costs the same to buy no matter where you live; obviously the carrier charge may differ but if you suffer from the dreaded pond scum then you will find this product to be a revolutionary cure.

Do Not Confuse Blanket Weed and Floating Algae ...

Green or brown murky pond water is caused by microscopic cell like algae that is suspended (floats) in the water. This type of algae is easily cured by the installation of a UV Clarifier (UV sterilizer) and must not be confused with Blanket weed, which can't be destroyed by a UV.

Blanket weed is also a nuisance to remove mechanically but this was one of the only effective ways of blanket weed removal in ponds prior to the introduction of the range of Viresco blanket weed solutions.
