Prepare Your Pond For The Cold Winter Months Ahead...

Fall (Autumn) has passed and the bitter cold winter nights will shortly be upon us; well for those of us who live in the colder Northern USA states, Canada, Northern Europe and the UK they will be anyway. 

The question is "How do you protect your fish pond from the cold weather conditions?" whilst also ensuring that you maintain a low maintenance backyard pond for the next few months.

I've written this article to provide some helpful backyard pond maintenance tips for winter ponds. This will help you to ensure that your fish pond remains in tip top shape over the winter months ahead.

Aquatic Pond Plants ...

Keeping Koi In Ponds Over Winter + Goldfish, Golden Orfe, etc

  • Switch to Cool Weather Pond Fish Food once the water temperature of the Pond drops below 60 degrees Fahrenheit (Pond Fish do not have a stomach and their digestion slows which can lead to impaction if food with too much protein is fed in cooler water).   • Keep a Pond Thermometer in the Pond to closely monitor the water temperature.
  • Add Pond Salt & Pond Care Stress Coat to increase the slime coat, help ward off parasites, disease & reduce stress.

  • Thoroughly clean your Biological Pond Filter
  • Inspect the Pond Filter for any wear or damage (it is best to order Pond Filter Replacement Parts now, so everything is ready to go again in the spring).
  • Submersible Pond Filters & Pond Filters without UV should be disconnected & stored in a frost free area.
  • External Pond Filters w/UV should be stored in a frost free area if you plan to turn it off during the winter.

Garden Pond Pumps

  • Thoroughly clean your Garden Pond Pump.
  • Inspect the Pond Pump for wear and damage (order Pond Pump Replacement Parts now so it is ready for spring).
  • Move the Pond Pump well below the freezing line if you are going to leave it running.
  • Take the Pond Pump inside if it will be turned off.

Pond Water Quality

  • Use a Pond Fish Net or Pond Vacuum Cleaner to remove organic leaves and other debris from the pond floor.
  • Change 1/3 of the Pond Water (be sure to use a de-chlorinator).
  • Test the Pond Water for pH level, Ammonia and Nitrite.
  • Make further slow water changes if Ammonia and Nitrite are present.
  • Adjust the pH level to within 6.8 - 8.0.
  • Use Viresco Algae & Blanketweed Remover to prevent string algae growth in the pond, on rocks and on water features and waterfalls. Viresco will also help to digest debris and organic pond sludge, making Spring maintenance a lot easier.

Pond Winterization Equipment

  • Install a Pond De-Icer to maintain a hole in the ice surface to allow gaseous exchange to take place. Allows poisonous carbon monoxide to escape.
  • Use a Pond Air Pump in Ponds with Koi or high Pond Fish Populations to ensure sufficient oxygen is circulating around the pond, should the pond freeze over.
  • Cover the Pond with Pond Netting to keep out leaves and protect the Pond Fish from predators
