What Does A Laguna Biological Pond Filter Do?
For those of you new to pond keeping you may believe that the purpose of a fish pond filter is to remove dirt and debris from the pond water, keeping it clean. While to an extent this is true, a biological pond filter serves a much more important function than this.
It's major purpose is to purify pond water, making it a safe environment for your koi, gold fish and other aquatic pond life to live in. It's major function in a garden fish pond is a biological one.
Let me explain! Fish bodily waste, uneaten fish food and decaying vegetation (plants, leaves etc), which has sunk and fallen to the pond bottom, after a period of time produces a chemical compound known as ammonia (NH3).
Ammonia in sufficiently high a concentration will start to poison the pond inhabitants. This is where a biological pond filter comes into play. It is in effect a mini sewage removal system.
Laguna pond filters contain a filter chamber where pond filter media is housed. This pond filter media (biomedia) is home to many millions of microscopic bacteria (Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter). Each of these beneficial bacteria plays a role in converting ammonia into much less harmful compounds; firstly nitrites and secondly into nitrates.
Although there are many suppliers of pond filters on the market and many variations of pond filters, designed for specific sized ponds and fish densities, the principles behind each of their pond filters is in essence the same, as described above. My advice to you, if you intend to keep a backyard garden pond containing pond fish is to use a biological filter of some description.

The reason as outlined above is because it lived in it's own toilet and because you didn't use a biological filter, there was no way of controlling the build up of ammonia, which eventually poisoned the poor creature.
