Gill Flukes or Skin flukes Cause Secondary Fish Disease Health Problems

Gill Flukes Skin Flukes Cause Koi And Goldfish Respiratory Problems

Any pond keeper worth his or her salt will know that prevention is better than cure when it comes to keeping pond fish, particularly expensive koi carp and ornamental pond fish. The secret to prevention is to spot tell tale signs that there are problems in your pond eco system. The starting point is always to know your pond fish and study their habits. Any variation from their normal behavior can give a tell tale sign that something is wrong.

Fish showing a reluctance to feed, fish that rest on the pond floor for long periods of time, fish that flash (sudden fast movements and scraping against hard surfaces in the pond), fish that spend long periods of time gasping for oxygen at the pond surface are all showing symptoms of “Stress” and this is a good indicator that not all is well within your backyard garden pond. Many of these issues can be attributed to poor biological pond filtration but sometimes the culprits are bacterial infestations and fish parasites, such as flukes.

Apart from isolating any infected fish the next step is to check for Ammonia, Nitrite, pH, Total Alkalinity and possibly Hardness, using an industry recognized pond water testing kit ... In fact routine pond water testing is an essential duty of any serious pond keeper. Early detection of high levels of ammonia for example will indicate there may issues relating to your biological pond filter not working properly.

High Ammonia Levels In Garden Fish Ponds Are Lethal

Excess ammonia in a pond eco system is potentially lethal to aquatic pond life. If you discover much higher than normal ammonia levels then you will need to replace between 20 to 40% of the volume of pond water, on a daily basis. When replacing the water spray it into the pond, so as to reduce the amount of chlorine (found in tap water) that you are adding to the pond … Click here to review a range of chlorine removing products that make tap water safe for your pond fish.

Microscopic Gill Fluke And Skin Fluke Fish Parasites

Freshwater flukes are not visible with the naked eye and require examination using a microscope of a scraping from the fish's skin. Parasite Flukes are either Gill Flukes or Skin flukes:

Pond Fish Gill fluke Parasite

Gill Fluke parasites are egg layers and their reproductive rate is a function of the pond water temperature; high pond water temperatures equates to high levels of egg laying and vice versa. The incubation period is also temperature dependant. Gill Flukes attach themselves to the gill region of pond fish and interfere with the fish’s ability to breathe … fish seen gasping at the pond surface for long periods of time may be infected with this parasite. Gill Flukes will also attach themselves to the hosts skin.

Pond Fish Skin Fluke Parasite

Skin flukes don’t lay eggs but instead give birth to live young, which immediately infect the host fish. The reproductive rate of Skin Flukes is extremely high. This microscopic view of  the Gyrodactylus skin fluke clearly shows the hooks that this fish parasite uses to attach itself to the fish host.

Both Gill Flukes and Skin Flukes feed on blood and mucus close to the surface of the fish's gill or skin. Skin flukes are happy to reside in the gills as Gill flukes are to live on the skin. They use hooks and/or suction to remain attached to the host.

Flukes survive in 0.3% salt solutions. In the majority of cases fish deaths are not as a direct result of infestation by Gill Flukes or Skin Flukes but as a result of the secondary bacterial ulcer infections from Aeromonas and Pseudomonas bacteria. These bacteria strains infect the stressed fish through wounds, sustained by the fish as it flashes against the sides of the pond.

How Do I Treat Gill Flukes Or Skin Flukes?

The oxidation and disinfection properties of Potassium Permanganate control flukes at the level of 0.2%. There are a range of effective Gill Fluke & Skin Fluke treatments available on-line, including Jungle Pond Anchors Away, Appond Fluke Tablets and Microbe Lift Praziquantel ... Please read the instructions carefully and don't overdose.
